Tell us about you and your business–

Fresh Baby Bites is a local baby food business based right here in San Francisco. We only use fresh, local, organic ingredients for our baby food-and offer everything from simple purees, to purees perfectly spiced up with fresh herbs and spices, to spices & grains where we incorporate healthy grains including amaranth, buckwheat, barley & quinoa.  We also include protein options–local, grass-fed beef, lamb and poultry.

What was your career prior to becoming a mompreneur?

I sold a wrinkle filler and a competitor to botox to plastic surgeon & cosmetic dermatologists.  I went from wrinkles to baby food!! My business partner, Cristina Serafyn, has a marketing background and has been to more farmers markets around the world than she can count!

Why do you want start your own business?

I always thought if you are going to work hard why not work for yourself?  I found something I was passionate about ran with it.  It hasn’t been as easy as i thought it was going to be but it is rewarding and enjoyable!

What makes you unique and makes your business different from anyone else out there?

We are the only baby food company in the area to exclusively use local ingredients–even our rice is from northern California!  You won’t see mangos on our menu because they don’t grow in our backyard!! Our menu changes not only seasonally but also weekly-we truly believe that variety is the spice of life!  We also use fresh herbs and spices to help develop baby’s palate at an early age-baby food does not need to be bland!!!  We deliver our Fresh Baby Bites bundles directly to your doorstep from Marin down to the South Bay-with several free pick up locations including Sprout, Peekadoodle, Day One center, Recess and Baby World.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your business so far?

We deliver Fresh Baby Bites ourselves to our customer’s doorstep-hearing from our parents and meeting the babies about how happy they are with the food, how we really have made their lives so much easier-giving the parents more time to spend with their baby is priceless.  We love that what we are doing is truly making a difference in the lives of our customers.  We also just celebrated our first year in business-a true milestone for any small start up and we are just now launching into adding finger food to our menu!

What do you like most about being a mompreneur?

Obviously the flexibility to set our own schedule and make our own decisions about how we want things to be.  It is very rewarding to do something you enjoy for yourself instead of working for someone else!  To see our idea actually in motion and looking forward to seeing where we can take the business over the next few years is very exciting

What advice do you have for other aspiring mompreneurs?

If you have the passion and drive to do something than go for it!!! Yes giving up the cushion of the corporate world can be tough-it took me about 2 years to give up the corporate world but I was confident in all the planning and background work that we did to make the leap of faith.  Yes I gave up a nice salary and probably won’t make any real money anytime soon-but I think that will change in the very near future.  Realize that it will be harder than you think but it will also be more rewarding than you think!  I would also suggest finding a business partner!! I know I couldn’t do it all by myself–if you have someone to work with that you like it will make life much easier and more fun!

If someone knocked on your door, and it was during business hours…  how will they find you?  Kid on hip, overalls… pjs?

Since I am 7  months pregnant you will most likely find me in yoga pants and a tank top! Cooking days include jeans and a long sleeved-T-shirt along with my apron and of course flats!!!

Do you each lunch?  Favorite food?

When we are in the kitchen we usually heat up Tamales from Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas.   Our office day is on Tuesday and our office is a local cafe with wi-fi so you will find us at The Grove most Tuesday’s-I love their Tuna Melt!

What time do you finally fall into bed at night?

I usually end up falling asleep in my daughter’s bed around 8:30 wake up an hour or so later and stumble into my own bed-my husband works NY hours so we are an early to bed household!

Any challenges you’d like to mention…?

Making the food is the easy part!! Getting the word out has been the most time-consuming part.  We are out constantly doing tastings at baby stores, mom groups, various Mom & Baby events- GGMG has been a great resource for helping us spread the word–We have nice relationships with Carmel Blue, Sprout, Day One Center, Recess and recently Baby World who have all been great at helping spread the word about Fresh Baby Bites.

Yeah, thank you KIM!
